60 Classes in 60 Days: #52-55

Only a few more days to go!  My plan is to finish on Saturday with a double in the morning so I can take Sunday off if I feel like it.  I’m pretty sure I’m going to do 90 days, so this feature will continue on the site.

For anyone who has tried Bikram yoga or who hasn’t, for that matter, a 90 day challenge is pretty steep in theory.  Not a lot of people put forward the effort to go to a 90 minute class multiple times a week, much less 90 times in 90 days.  It truly is a time commitment.  I’ve had to rearrange multiple things in my life, skip on fun stuff, and I’m teaching a class that starts on July 3rd.

I have to keep at it though.  I’m making great progress and it’s helping me immensely to have a goal to work towards, even if it’s as simple as the current number out of 60.  While I may not be perfect (and no one is in yoga, it’s a life quest to do these postures), I’m at least trying.

60 Classes in 60 Days: #46-51

Last week was intense, people!  10 classes in 7 days and I’m doing it again this week!

I was going to go this morning to the 530 class but I was absolutely exhausted.  Our old kitty, Nema, kept us up all night on Saturday and Sunday because she was screaming for her shower.  I think she has kitty craziness. It was literally like every hour on the hour.  So when the alarm rang this morning at 445, I was real quick to turn it off and go back to bed!

It’s a good thing that I went yesterday (normally don’t go on Sundays) so I had a class already under my belt for the week.  I’ll be doing doubles on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.  My 60th class will be on Sunday, unless I pull a triple on Friday (since I’ll be off).  I could do it, technically, if I did a 530, 930 and 5pm.  We’ll see.  It sounds crazy.

I need to get a haircut.  My hair is growing so fast now that I haven’t been able to keep up with it.  I think I still have a couple of inches of old chemically-dyed hair on the ends, so it will be good to get that off.  I can definitely tell a difference now between my henna’ed hair and the chemically-dyed hair.  I think part of it is because I’m sweating so much in class, the salt is making my hair even drier.

My life, 4 years ago (PART 2)

Today I bring you another fun survey from April 2009.  It’s funny how cheese products also make an appearance in this piece.  Also owl tattoos.
1. What time did you get up this morning? 9:00am. Not too late, not too early.

2. How do you like your steak? medium. I am ok if it moo’s a little.

3. What was the last film you saw at the cinema? Public Enemies with Bill and Gretchen. I love Johnny Depp.

My life, 4 years ago

During lunch, I was trolling through my Facebook page and found a note that I had posted (remember when we used to do surveys on Facebook and post them as notes?).  I looked at the date of April 2009 and thought it would be fun to post this on the blog today.  So without further ado, here is my life from 4 years ago….

60 Classes in 60 Days: #37-45

I’m halfway through my first week of doubles (10 classes each week, so I did 5 classes in 3 days already) and I haven’t fallen out yet.  In fact, I’m doing surprisingly well, considering I’ve done a full 20 classes in 20 days this month.  This is by far the most active I’ve been in a REALLY, REEEEEEEELY long time.  Like in at least 7 or 8 years.  That’s major, people.  I was working out quite a bit in 2004-2005 because that was around the time I was finishing my master’s degree and was getting married thereafter.  But after that, it was all downhill.  And you know how that ended up.

So as I reflect on the month ending and the possibility of a 90 day challenge, I can’t help but be a little bewildered.  When did this change happen?  Am I becoming an actual exercising person?  How did that happen?

Has being in a 105 degree room for hours on end over the past few months caused my brain to work differently?  Am I dehydrating myself into lunacy????  (don’t worry, I drink over 100 ounces of water every day, in addition to my 22 ounces of coconut water after each class)

But seriously, this is a strange place to be.  I no longer walk into the studio and lay down on my mat, immediately worrying about injuries and things like that.  I lay down on my mat and think about normal people things like this:

  1. It’s flipping hot in here.  Why do I keep coming back?
  2. Maybe I should have peed one more time before I came in here.
  3. I hope the guy who “adjusts” himself all the time isn’t next to me.  I can’t deal with that again in my peripheral vision.
  4. I need to shave my legs.
  5. Maybe I should bring a 32 ounce bottle of water to class like everyone else?  No, you don’t need more than 8 ounces of water during class.  You’ll just yack it up during forward folding postures.
  6. If I fall asleep while waiting for class to start, will I start snoring since I’m on my back?

So as you can see, my mind is totally not on what it was consumed with 6 months, even 3 months ago.

Perhaps it’s because I’ve finally come to realize, and ACCEPT, that each day on the mat is different.  Even if I pull a double that day, each class is different.  My body is different.  This has become my mantra…

just now

60 Classes in 60 Days: Two more weeks!

I can’t believe that I’ve got two more weeks to go on my 60 day challenge!  I’m even crazy enough to think about extending it to 90 days now.  I know!

Last week, I did doubles on Friday and Saturday because I got behind on classes with the bad storms that went through.  I got stuck in traffic two times and totally missed class.  On Saturday, the owner of the studio surprised us with popsicles after class, since we are halfway done with the 30 day challenge (well, everyone but me).  I thought it was such a nice gesture and it encouraged people to stick around and talk after class.  I wasn’t going to eat one after the first class since I had 30 minutes before my next one, but I really needed to cool off and fast.  The humidity from the storms really made the room hot!

Jackie, one of the new instructors, was teaching that morning.  I am really starting to get into the groove of her dialogue style.  She’s definitely a little more crunchy than the rest of the instructors and likes to tell people it’s okay and sit down.  For someone doing back to back classes, it’s good to hear this (even though you know you can sit down whenever anyway).  I sat out of four postures (2 in the standing and two on the floor) during the second class and I’m glad for it.  After the second class, I had ANOTHER popsicle!  It was delicious.

I have had some people ask me how the bikini quest is going.  I think I’m getting there!  I haven’t lost but a few pounds, but I know I’m getting smaller.  I know for sure that I’ve got a zillion more muscles in my legs too.

I’m so pleased, in fact, that I’m even willing to put up a progress photo.  Be kind, my interweb friends!

Embrace the curves, ladies!

So as you can see, I am wearing a bikini in my shower.  It’s the only place in the house I can get a good pic that is sort of full-length body.

As you know, I have serious body dysmorphia problems, so it’s hard to tell (for me at least) how I’m doing.  Sometimes I look at this and think, yeah I’m getting there.  Other times, I think, oh this is bad.

Realistically, I look at this right now and think that I’m doing well.  I don’t want to be super skinny so I’m not obsessing over being x inches smaller on my waist or whatever.  I look at this and I’m glad that I’m curvy.  It’s clear that I’m slimming down in places and I just need to keep up with my good efforts.  I eat well, drink my veggie juices almost 5 days a week, and I’m pushing myself at the studio.

Sure, I could be doing cardio too, which would probably help.  But right now I’m just happy to be on my strengthening kick and my heart is getting a good workout for several hours a week in the studio.  Seriously, if you haven’t done hot yoga before, you can’t understand how much your heart works.  Many of the postures in the Bikram series are actually designed to make your heart and lungs work, so that is good.  If I can get through the summer without hurting myself, I may start adding in cardio in the fall.

So there you go.  A declaration of a possible 90 day challenge and a bikini pic.  I’m proud of what I’ve done and where I know I’m going.

60 Classes in 60 days: #31-36

Instead of posting a lot about the challenge, I seem to be posting once a week.  Hope you don’t mind!  It’s not like anything life-shattering is happening.

A few interesting things in the past week on the mat/studio:

  1. New instructor, Erin.  Just took the 530am class with her this morning.  She is awesome!!!  She used to own her own dance and tumbling studio but came to Bikram because she knew she was ripping her joints up with the gymnastics.  I can tell she has these two backgrounds.  She is lean, graceful, but incredibly powerful in her postures.  I took a class last week where she was near me and her postures are amazing.  Actually, her entire muscular structure is amazing.  Today, I found her dialogue to be very reflective of her background.  She is firm, attentive, and clear with instructions.  It reminded me of being in a dance studio with the tone of her voice, which I liked.  She pretty much stayed with the script, so it will be interesting to see how her personality emerges as we all get to know her better.
  2. Discovering I really like the 530am classes on MWF.  There are about 8 people that come in and it’s nice to have some space. Getting up at 430 is not that much fun but it’s worth it, especially on days where I know I need to do a double and I can’t wrap my brain around back to back evening classes.
  3. Realizing that I still have a lot of work to do on my own neuromuscular issues.  A great example of this is the floor bow pose.  I just can’t make any type of mental connection to my legs when they say to kick up and back.  The pose is supposed to look like this:Beautiful-Woman-Doing-Floor-Bow-Pose-1The posture begins with you laying flat on your stomach, then reaching back for your feet.  I have zero problem with that part, or raising up my torso. The part I can’t seem to make work is lifting my legs up.  I think, go up.  Lift up.  Kick back.  But nothing happens.  I end up more like this:

It is very frustrating (like deja vu all over again) to try to get your body to do something that seems perfectly reasonable and then nothing happens.  It’s been my mission this month in class to just get my legs to lift up, even if it’s for a second. I have found rolling my weight forward sort of helps with this, since I have such a broad rib cage this works.  But then, just when I think I’m getting there, I can’t get up.  It may also be an issue with my lower back being weak.  This is the last posture in the spine-strengthening series.

In other news, Kevin had a gig last weekend!  After two years in the garage, his drum set finally saw the light of day.  It was a pleasant evening in terms of weather and we had a TON of people come out for the band.  Not a lot of photos taken once they started playing, but Cori, Megan, and I managed a quick pick outside beforehand.

I absolutely ADORE these ladies!!  Kevin always says it looks like sisters when we are out.  I would be proud to call them my sisters any day!

Being a responsible adult: Emergency Preparedness

With our first tropical storm of the season approaching tomorrow, I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve never put together an emergency kit or binder at the Hall Hacienda.

It looks like we may have a busy storm season and it’s been more than a couple of years since we moved in, so I think it’s about time.

I’ll cover the emergency kit on another post, but for this one I’m going to talk about an emergency binder.

I’ve heard of people having important documents in a safe, but I’ve never put much thought into actually organizing it into a binder.  I love organization, you know me!

So I started it this week and plan to have it done by the end of the month.  I’ve heard that Avery makes a secure top sheet protector, so I may get those.  Also need pouches and a jump drive to scan all items on that are in the binder, keeping that in the binder as well.

I got a large binder and some dividers, which I labeled in the following categories…

  1. Proof of Identification
  2. Phone numbers and passwords
  3. Medical Records
  4. Accounts (Bank/Loans)
  5. Property Records
  6. Insurance Policies
  7. Pet Information
  8. Mom Information (since if we are likely to evacuate, she comes with us)

I’m slowly working on the contents, but here is what I plan to put in each section…

  1. Proof of Identification
    1. Photos of each of us, labeled (make sure I also have photos of us in glasses)
    2. Photos of us together, labeled
    3. Copies of drivers licenses
    4. Passports (in a pouch)
    5. Copies of school identification (Kevin’s school and ODU for me)
    6. Birth certificates
    7. Marriage license
    8. Social security cards
    9. Proof of Power of Attorney for my mom
    10. Diploma copies and transcripts
    11. Fingerprint card from police station (this is a good idea I read about on a blog).  Costs $10 in Virginia Beach.
  2. Phone numbers and passwords
    1. Our phone numbers
    2. Family phone numbers/addresses
    3. Close friends phone numbers/addresses
    4. Login and passwords for online accounts (this seems weird but people say it’s good to have)
    5. Phone numbers for emergency/utilities
    6. Phone numbers to all accounts we hold
  3. Medical records
    1. Copies of prescriptions and pharmacy contact info
    2. Immunization records (not sure if I can find these)
    3. Names and phone numbers of all doctors
    4. Quick fact sheet on each of us (Height, weight, eye color, hair color, meds, allergies, illness: in Kevin’s case)
  4. Accounts
    1. Checking/savings account information
    2. Student loans
    3. Mortgage info
    4. Any other loan information
    5. Retirement accounts
    6. Utilities
  5. Property records
    1. Photographs of both cards
    2. Car registrations and titles
    3. Photographs inside and outside the house
    4. An account of what is in each room of our house, including photos and value estimates
      1. Kevin’s drum stuff
  6. Insurance policies
    1. Cars
    2. House
    3. Health
  7. Pet information
    1. Photos of Nema and Athena (including a photo from Athena from behind so you can see her markings), labeled with quick read information that can also be used as flyers
    2. Medical records for both
    3. Nema’s insulin prescription
    4. Immunization records for both
    5. Rabies tags for both
    6. Microchip information for Athena
  8. Mom information
    1. Duplication of above items for Mom

I’ve also heard that people will put cash in small bills in their binder, as well as extra credit/debit cards, a map of the region/area, and extra copies of the photographs that are labeled for each person/group in case people get separated and you need flyers to hand out.  Having a small thing of tape, little scissors, a sharpie and pen are also good.

I plan to get a fire/water resistant box to store this in.  The interweb recommends that this be a portable safe, so you can pick it up and go.  That way too, other items of importance can be placed in the box along with the binder.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten something, but that’s it for now!

60 Classes in 60 days: #27- #30

I’m feeling inspired this morning….

Whooah, I’m half way there
Livin on a prayer
Take my mat and I’ll make it – I swear
Ohhh oh!  Living on a prayer!

That’s right, people.  At 5:30 this morning, I checked in for my 30th class.  I’m halfway done!!!!

Becka took my photo after class by the board so we could commemorate.  She was so excited.  I was super sweaty!  Now you can see how I look after 90 minutes in a room that is between 103-105 degrees.

30 days

I’ve got a lot of doubles this week to catch up from my mom having surgery last week.

60 classes in 60 days: #25-27

I can’t believe it’s already June!  It seems like we went straight from winter to summer.

I’m also at the *almost* halfway point in my challenge.  I’m a few days behind so I’ve got to get my butt in the studio this week for some doubles to catch up.  I’m definitely going to double up on Friday and Saturday.

They put up the challenge board in the studio last weekend, so we all put our names on it (probably a couple dozen of us) and put our stickers up for the first class that day.  Becka, the owner, asked me to front load all of my stickers so people could see what I was doing with my own personal challenge.  I made sure to write next to my name that I was doing 60 classes in 60 days so they would know why there was 27 stickers up there already for a 30 day challenge.  I’m starting to talk to people more outside of class in the halls and out front, telling them what I’m up to, and getting lots of support and encouragement.

The last few classes have been really hot.  Saturday morning, I ended up going in the shower fully clothed again between classes to get my body temp down.  I don’t even care if I’m already wet.  I just stayed in the same clothes.  Wore just the sports bra and shorts again.  So sweaty in the second class that I bent over, squeezed the front of my bra, and a TON of sweat came out.  Gross. First class was sweaty, but this was above and beyond. I think my body must enter into another phase of detoxing when I go to back to back classes.  It’s like the sweat is just POURING out of me and I really start to smell funky.  All I can think is that it’s a good thing.

Finally found my go-to snack in between classes on double days.  Cliff Energy Chews.  They are all natural (not corn syrup like the Gatorade crap) and have a little caffeine in them.  I’m perfecting my water intake too on these days: one coconut water during the first class, then fill it up with water from the fountain to drink during the break.  Regular 16 ounce water bottle during the second class, then refill it twice and drink both before leaving the studio.
